Dimensional accuracy and repeatability as the key: Precisely positioned perforations enable the clean implementation of the motif effect across 5,800 m² of perforated aluminium sheet.

Neunkirchen, 18 March 2026. For the new central depot for the museums and archives of the City of Regensburg and the Diocese of Regensburg, SCHÄFER Perforated Metal implemented the rivet-point perforations in the façade perforated sheets in accordance with specification. The perforated metal specialist from Neunkirchen in the Siegerland region produced the perforations as defined setting points where coloured rivets were later installed. Dimensional accuracy and repeatability are crucial for the execution so that the rivet positions fit precisely during installation and the motif remains coherently legible across the large-format façade surfaces.

The building envelope of the central depot for the museums and archives of the City of Regensburg and the Diocese of Regensburg is designed as a suspended construction and clad with bent and folded perforated aluminium sheet. The large-scale design was created as part of an artists’ competition jointly announced by the City and the Diocese. The motif “Protecting and Preserving” by artists Susanna and Bernhard Lutzenberger from Bad Wörishofen shows two hands stretching across the façade. The image is made visible by coloured rivets, which were installed on site by the artists. To ensure that the rivet colours depicted the motif correctly across the surface, the rivet points had to be clearly defined and reproducibly positioned during production. For these special perforations, MN Metall relied on the manufacturing expertise of SCHÄFER Perforated Metal.

“Our task was to implement the perforations in such a way that the rivet points fit with precise positioning during installation and the visual effect of the image remains comprehensible across the entire surface. For this, reproducible perforation positions and consistently uniform execution quality across all components are essential,” explains Thomas Schmidt, Division Manager at SCHÄFER Perforated Metal.
The client for the façade solution was MN Metall from Neustadt. The central depot was clad with customised wellTEC-vario® profiles. The 5,800-square-metre cladding consists of mill-finished aluminium with a material thickness of one millimetre. A façade surface 180 metres long and 12 metres high had to be designed. “To implement the design, the perforated sheets had to be consistent not only visually, but above all in the perforation positions across all elements. The perforations implemented by SCHÄFER Perforated Metal in accordance with specification gave us planning certainty during installation and were a decisive factor in ensuring that the motif effect and the overall image on the surface worked as intended,” says Danny Lorenz, Sales Director at MN Metall GmbH.
